Now in its 21st year, the Redland Orchid Festival grew out of a desire to add one more sales event at the end of the spring show season. Founding member Lynn Bretsnyder said, "We wanted a venue that was relaxing and upbeat where we could provide educational lectures, show quality plants on display and global vendors with great product for sale." This seemingly simple goal requires an incredible amount of behind-the-scenes work by scores of volunteers. "The permitting and paperwork itself is a full-time job" says Robert Randall of Carib Plants Inc.. The vision of the seven founding members and dedication of the remaining four has paid off. The Redland International Orchid Festival is generally acknowledged by orchid hobbyists as the one not-to-be-missed event of the year.
One of the hallmarks of the Redland International Orchid Festival is the weekend-long lecture series. Here, in the comfort of the air conditioned lecture room at the Fruit & Spice Park, you can learn how to grow that difficult species or how to control a pesky pest invasion. Speakers are hand picked from visiting growers and local academics.
You'll be surprised at what you can learn!
This is an AOS-judged event. Teams are assigned in the Exhibition Tent at the main entrance of the festival beginning at 3:00pm on Thursday, May 17. Judging takes place in the air conditioned lecture hall. If you are an AOS judge and would like to judge at the event, contact email@example.com.
Getting to the festival is easy and there is plenty of free parking. If you are flying to South Florida you can use either Miami International Airport or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Most international vendors use Miami International because of the USDA facilities.
