Mayor Smith Joseph, D.O. Pharm.D., will present the Key to the City to Deval Patrick, former Governor of Massachusetts. The presentation will follow Patrick’s lecture to North Miami Senior High School students, titled “From Marching to Kneeling:The Struggle for Equality Continues.”

THEME:
“Hidden Figures: Local Hero In My Community”
Write an essay about one African American person you consider a local hero, and explain why. This individual may be a community member, friend or family member. 
Celebrating History, Culture & Literacy
 
RULES:
  • The contest is open to students in 4th 
  • 12th grades.- Essays must be original, 300 
  • 500 words, typed, double-spaced,on white paper and in the contestant’s own words.
  • No photos or illustrations allowed with the essay.
  • Student’s name and grade level must appear at the top of each page.
  • All entries MUST be accompanied by an original entry form.
  • All participants MUST have a Public Library card by February 16.

All essays must be delivered to the North Miami Public Library 835 NE 132 Street, North Miami, FL 33161 
All contestants will receive awards!Winners will be announced and must be present at the Black history month essay contest announcement on Thursday, February 22, 2018, 6 p.m. at the North Miami Public Library.

The North Miami Public Library and the Miami Oratorio Society Present Spirit II, a FREE evening of gospel, spiritual and classical choir performances, directed by Andrew Anderson and featuring jazz and gospel performances by Tiffany Hall and the Aaron Lebos Jazz Reality Band.

The North Miami Public Library in partnership with the Oscar Thomas Foundation will proudly recognize winners of the City of North Miami’s 2018 Black History Essay Contest. Awards will be presented by retired Officer Richard Johnson, who made history as Miami-Dade County Police Department’s first African-American member of its Underwater Recovery Unit.
